ALL MAPPED OUT
Is it possible that your whole life is waiting to be deciphered by you- that it's all neatly lain down, waiting to be read by you, on the palm of your hand?
Of all fortune telling means, this seems the most haunting, and so accurate. It's actually quite scientific, the study of criss-crossing lines. There are specific rules to go by that can be understood by all, not mystical gibberish that merely confounds.
And then, it is not rigid in stating facts, it accepts the case varies person to person, and that 'fate' can be changed.
The scientific 'explanation' is the various chemical components that make a person what he is, and that simultaneously affect the make- up of the hand (consider the fact that people with longer ring fingers are supposed to be inclined mathematically, while those with longer index fingers are better at languages, all because the same chemicals affect the length and the part of the brain that dictates intelligence. Incidentally, I have both of equal length, and am equally suited to both.)
But, though this explanation is interesting, isn't the beauty of the whole thing mesmerizing, doesn't it speak of a wonderfully synchronized orchestration guided by an all- knowing force?
In the end, the thing to be remembered is that your life is in your hands- take that as you wish.

A MIXTURE OF BOTH...
A scientific temper, I thought, always consisted of not believing in superstitions, astrology, tales of monsters, and mythology. well, though that hasn't necassarily changed, I'm beginning to review my position on astrology- I mean, if you read a description of your sunsign (and the very fact that I did speaks tons!) you'll actually find the description kinda fits you. Or perhaps it's because it's flattering and who'se not going to believe that???
But reading Linda Goodman, you can't say each sunsign fits you. Though two of them do, in my case, but then I was born on the cusp. So, I'm a mixture and melange of Cancer and Gemini (born on 22nd).
Now you'll say, doesn't that just show every description fits anyone? But no, seriously, look at these, sentences:

"Gemini have a love of languages, and are usually learning some language, and their favoueite is french! (I am learning francais- so there!)"

"Gemini are quick to learn to read... it's as if words are made for them... this sunsign rules writing..."(and I have been told by friends I'm clever with words!)

"Cancerians are a pessimistic lot... they need to be constantly told they are needed in this world... they can drown you in their pessimism..." (True again!)

And this was when I didn't know I was a Gemini!
So go check the newspaper, remember the column on sunsigns that's always there?

THE VAST REACHES OF THE UNIVERSE
There are ways of viewing stars. It can be done by looking up at the night sky and straining your neck while trying to take in the sky. Or through a telescope, looking at smudges millions of miles away, brought close to you by a miracle of science.
And then there are views with which to view stars. Like a casual observer who has time on his hands. Or like a poet, dazzled by the beauty of the heavens above him. Or perhaps even, as a scientist, trying to work out th mysteries of those tiny twinkling lights.

The last view is, I find, the most interesting.

What is it about the skies that surround me that so allures me, beckons to me, intices me to know its mysteries? Whatever it may be, I still am allured, inticed, tempted, enchanted...
What secrets do these stars know? What universes of knowledge can it yield?

Scientists- astrologers, cosmologists, physicists- they're all doing their best to hunt out the secrets. Have been doing so for ges. Yet they're far from getting to know how it all works.

Picking up a book on the universe, and its mechanics, the matter seems to wash over me, like a pleasant dream, and a very nice one, like a fairytale come true, exhilarating me, making my pulse race, and yet, I'm unable to grasp the enormity of what is lited in front of me. Of the achievments of the theory of relativity, and quantum mechanics, and how the two seem to be irreconcilable.

Quasars, and quarks, the possibility of life and its improbabilities, all of this and its thoughts haunt me. And then I think, perhaps a good outlet will be a poem. Not scientific at all. I disappoint myself...
